The museum is the central facility of the historical park “Omi-fudoki-no-oka” that includes the ruins of Azuchi Castle. Visitors can enjoy learning about history with exhibits focusing on the Yayoi Period, the Kofun Period, the construction of medieval castles, and Oda Nobunaga.
Visitors to the historical park “Omi-fudoki-no-oka” can experience the history of Omi through the Azuchi Castle Ruins, a special historical site, the Ohnaka Konan Ruins, the Hyobozan Tumulus, a historical site, and the Kannondera Castle Ruins, a historical site.
In the first permanent exhibition room, visitors can step back in time to the Yayoi Period and the Kofun Period in Omi under the theme of “Archaeology. Ancient ruins in Shiga Prefecture are introduced and excavated artifacts are displayed.
In the Yayoi Period corner, visitors can experience the lifestyle and natural environment of that period through actual artifacts such as farming tools and bronze bells excavated from the Ohnaka-no-ko and Oiwayama ruins.
In the Kofun Period Corner, bygone burials and reconstructed pit-shaped stone chambers are exhibited, mainly from the Hyotsuyama and Yukinoyama Kofun tumuli.
In addition, through the display of ornaments excavated from the Kamoinariyama Kofun Tumulus and Yamatsuteru Shrine Kofun Tumulus and a full-scale reconstruction of an Omi yokoana-shiki stone chamber, changes in burial methods over time and the rulers of the Omi region are shown.
In the second permanent exhibition room, under the theme of “Medieval and Warring Periods,” visitors can learn about changes in castles such as Azuchi Castle, Omi in the Warring Period, and the character of Oda Nobunaga.
Castle Building in the Middle Ages introduces some of the medieval castles with full-scale restorations, showing how they differed from Azuchi Castle.
Omi in the Warring States Period introduces visitors to medieval castles in Omi, such as Kanonji Castle and Kotani Castle, and also displays materials related to the Rokkaku and Asai clans.
In Azuchi Castle and Oda Nobunaga, a reconstructed model of the ruins of Azuchi Castle, results of excavation surveys, and materials related to Nobunaga are on display.
In the “Castles in Modern Times” section, the exhibition is summarized by the clarification of the castle structure that developed from Azuchi Castle, with Hikone Castle as the centerpiece. A video theater and the “Nobunaga Study Room” also provide visitors with a wealth of information.
In addition, special exhibitions are held in spring and fall and special exhibitions in summer and winter at the Planning Exhibition Hall.
The museum also holds a variety of events, including museum lectures, hands-on museum activities, tea ceremonies, sketch contests, and museum concerts. Special exhibitions held for limited periods are also attractive.
The museum also has a museum store and restaurant where visitors can enjoy delicious meals such as Omi beef hamburgers and meat udon noodles. The Nobunaga Coffee Set is especially special, with gold leaf on top of the coffee.
Shiga Prefectural Azuchi Castle Museum of Archaeology is located in Shimotoyoura, Azuchi-cho, Omihachiman City, Shiga Prefecture, and is dedicated to castles and archaeology.
Located in Bungei no Sato, the center of the historical park “Omi Fudoki-no-Oka,” the museum was established as a center for research, preservation, and promotion of four national historic sites and groups of cultural property buildings, including the Azuchi Castle Ruins, a special historic site, the Kannonji Castle Ruins, the Koubouyama Tumulus, and the Konan Site in Onaka.
This museum is positioned as the successor to the Shiga Prefectural Omi Fudoki-no-oka Museum. Various events such as special exhibitions, special exhibitions, and museum lectures are actively held.
The museum has two permanent exhibition halls: Permanent Exhibition Hall 1 and Permanent Exhibition Hall 2. In the first permanent exhibition hall, exhibits from the Yayoi Period and the Kofun Period are displayed. Visitors can experience full-scale reconstructions of the Konan Site in Onaka, the Hyotanayama Kofun Tumulus, and the Yukinoyama Kofun Tumulus. There are also exhibits focusing on each period of the Kofun period, with artifacts from the Shinkai Kofun Tumulus, Kamoinariyama Kofun Tumulus, and Yamatsuteru Shrine Kofun Tumulus on display.
The second permanent exhibition room focuses on castles from the Warring States Period, Azuchi-Momoyama Period, and Edo Period. There are exhibits on castles such as Kannonji Castle, Kotani Castle, and Hikone Castle, as well as on Oda Nobunaga. In the outdoor exhibits, visitors can also see the former Miyaji Family Residence, a mid-Edo period private residence, the former Yanagihara School building, a quasi-Western-style building, and the former Azuchi Police Station.
