The museum exhibits a full-size reconstruction of the original castle keep (parts of the 5th and 6th floors) of the phantom Azuchi Castle. The elegant Azuchi Castle has been faithfully restored with gold and blue barrier paintings by Eitoku Kano, gorgeous exterior walls with 100,000 pieces of gold leaf, and a large roof with golden orcas on it.
Visitors can also enjoy a 200-inch large screen that uses computer graphics to recreate images of Azuchi Castle and the castle town.
The main keep of Azuchi Castle, built by Nobunaga Oda in 1579, was the world’s first wooden skyscraper, and its gorgeous appearance is said to have been highly praised by Christian missionaries.
However, the castle was destroyed by fire in the Honnoji Incident of 1582, and its appearance was lost for a long time.
More than 400 years after the fire, the castle was restored to its original size as the main exhibit in the Japan Pavilion at Expo ‘92 in Seville, Spain.
Many master craftsmen participated in this restoration project, and the gorgeous exterior of the building was recreated, including the eaves roof covered with gold leaf tiles, the paintings of heavenly figures on the ceiling, and the large roof topped with gold ornamentation.
The Expo drew the largest number of visitors during the Expo period, impressing a large number of people.
Later, Azuchi Town took over the building and dismantled it and moved it to a new location. The fifth floor has a new eave roof made of baked tiles, and the sixth floor has an exterior wall with 100,000 gold leaf pieces and gold leaf orcas.
Inside the main building, the gold and blue barrier paintings that Nobunaga Oda Nobunaga is said to have had painted by Eitoku Kano and others have been reproduced and are on display.
The VR Azuchi Castle Theater shows a 15-minute short movie “Gorgeous Azuchi Castle” reproduced using computer graphics, allowing visitors to experience the real Azuchi Castle and castle town of that period on a 200-inch large screen.
Also on display is a menu of Nobunaga’s feast, allowing visitors to experience the dining culture of the time.
The Azuchi Castle Tenshu Nobunaga no Yakata is part of a comprehensive facility established by the former Azuchi Town in 1994 as the Azuchi Town Literary and Art Center. This facility is equipped with a classical music hall and a general arena, and is used as a center for culture and the arts.
The Azuchi Castle Tenshu Nobunaga no Yakata is an important facility that recreates the vision of the famous Azuchi Castle and conveys to visitors the golden age of Japan.
